Keren Khromchenko, Manalapan: With names like Hlavata and Duddy in the headlines, and team achievements by Holmdel, Marlboro, Rumson-Fair Haven, and the likes stealing the spotlight, Manalapan’s Keren Khromchenko operated under the radar in 2013, but still carved out her piece of the Shore Conference tennis landscape by compiling a 19-3 record, including an undeafeated mark in the Class A North. Khromchecnko charged into the Monmouth County Flights semifinals and was one of the final 16 standing in the NJSIAA State Singles Tournament, en route to a First Team All-Shore selection. Now in her senior campaign, Khromchenko is primed to command the attention she is deserved.

Jamie Breunig, Toms River East: After some uncertainty about playing in 2013 following her second back fracture, Breunig didn’t just compete, but churned out the best individual effort in Raiders program history with an overall record of 23-3 and her second consecutive Ocean County Flights first singles championship. In 2014 Breunig will look to assert herself as not just the best Ocean County has to offer, but one of the top players in the Shore Conference.

Megan Giaimo, St. John Vianney: St. John Vianney coach Bob O’Connor will pencil Giaimo’s name into the top singles spot for the third consecutive season, and in that time she’s earned the respect of the local tennis ranks by competing with the top hitters in the toughest division (Class A Central) the Shore Conference has to offer. However, entering her junior year off a very good 12-6 campaign and a Second Team All-Shore selection, Giaimo will look to obtain more than mere appreciation amongst her peers, but rather emerge as one of the top players in the Shore.

Brianne Lauria, Manasquan: When a decorated player like Abby Duddy leaves a program, the heir to that throne is always left in a challenging position, but Lauria is ready to shoulder the load. The junior has spent the past two seasons prepping in the second singles position where she compiled an overall record of 45-7, including a pair of Central Jersey Group II tournament wins in 2013 followed by a tough 1-6, 6-4 (3-10) loss to Holmdel’s Sarah Yan in the state semifinals, and an eventual Second Team All-Shore selection. 2014 shoulde act as Lauria’s official coming out party.

Hayley Barnett, Marlboro: Barnett has fronted the Class A North powerhouse Mustangs for the past two seasons compiling a record of 26-13 at first singles in that time span and in 2013 led Marlboro to a 14-5 season and a division championship, before capturing a Central Jersey Group IV tournament victory over Monroe. Now a senior, the local tennis landscape is set for Barnett to cement her legacy amongst the Shore Conference’s best in 2014.

Sarah Yan, Holmdel: A Second Team All-Shore selection in 2013, Yan is the sole starter returning to the Hornets singles lineup that helped lead Holmdel to both Shore Conference Tournament and Central Jersey Group II championships and will be thrust into a leadership position as coach Chuck Chelednik welcomes freshman Alexandra Wojciak and sophomore trasnfer Brianna Gibbs into his top three.

Jordan Vasarkovy, Toms River North: Went a combined 24-7 in regular season and tournament play last season and will look to lead Toms River North to its fourth consecutive Ocean County Flights (OCF) team title. Vasarkovy fell to Toms River East’s Jamie Breunig in the OCF first singles final in 2013, but has much to prove in her senior campaign.

Anjali Prabhat, Freehold Boro: Prabhat would be entering her third season at first singles had Michaela Hlavata not transferred from the Czech Republic to Freehold in 2013, and the junior is primed for a breakout season after going 20-4 a year ago. She’ll receive a good test on September 10th in an early-season matchup with now Class A North rival Hayley Barnett of Marlboro.

Monica Chang, Jackson Memorial: Chang has flown under the radar as a member of the Jaguars but is certainly a talent to be recognized. Jackson’s top singles player enters the season with 56.5 career victories after placing third in the Ocean County Flights (OCF) first singles bracket behind Breunig and Vasarkovy in 2013, and winning the OCF second singles bracket in 2012.
